Someone received a message with a link to a strange website on the Internet (shocker!).  This site proved to be more nebulous than your average spam ad involving morse code, hidden html, and other peculiarities yet to be found.

Below is the discussion from the Reddit post that started the investigation.  Can you solve the mystery?

the others are watching. their presence corrupts you, their lies mislead you, their barriers block you. break these barriers, and you shall be bathed in the radiant light of the truth. the first half of your code is xj4. this page holds more than it seems. good luck.

That’s how I cpi, the xj4 bit my wife started talking to me so I grabbed what I thought I heard. /r/the_colonelclink may have that part right.

the_colonelclink

Yeah I got: / …– —– —-. / after the code, so I’m still banking on 309. Something I’ve discovered is the ‘title’ of the page, appears to be hidden and is a 64 character long… hex code maybe? That’s as far as my knowledge goes.

bsdboy

Might have to listen again… it’s nice and slow, so easy to copy… but when someone’s talking to you it messes me up. Pretty sure I heard an x in there.

edit: Nope, you’re absolutely correct… just went and re-listened and it’s definitely 309. Whatever that means…

the_colonelclink

Another small discovery: If you ‘Select all’ the ‘Copy’ and ‘Paste’, you get the number 710. Searching for this number in the ‘inspect element’ you see it’s ID is = truth…

if you look at the html, the first comment is an ascii hand

Here’s where your 710 “truth” comes from:

    <script>
            setTimeout(function(){ document.getElementById("truth").innerHTML = "710"; }, 16000);

            var camera, scene, renderer;
            var video, videoTexture,videoMaterial;
            var composer;
            var shaderTime = 0;
            var badTVParams, badTVPass;
            var staticParams, staticPass;
            var rgbParams, rgbPass;
            var filmParams, filmPass;
            var renderPass, copyPass;
            var gui;
            var pnoise, globalParams;

            init();
            animate();

Thank you SO MUCH to you and /u/the_colonelclink. This is great! What an awesome sub.

bsdboy

Okay you’re turn, what the hell is it from?! ?

edit: Oh dear…

A friend of mine got a strange website in the mail leading her to this website.

Don’t ever follow strange websites in your mail! While this time it’s been fun, this is how bad things happen.

the_colonelclink

Even more scarier… if you domain search the website; it’s blocked. Whoever owns the website, doesn’t want anyone figuring out.

colonelclink

Yeah, that’s definitely the first bit. I think the next bit may be wrong. Having said that, if you inspect the element on the page, there is an ASCII art hand, if that’s a clue to something?

rdisintheparty[S]

Yeah, we saw that part. I don’t quite know what to make of it

the_colonelclink

Alright, so I bothered to delve a bit more into it, and now I’m genuinely intrigued. The message as (probably poorly) decoded by me is as follows:

The others are watching. Their presence corrupts you, their lies mislead you, their barriers block you. Break these barriers, and you shall be bathed in the radiant light of the truth. The first half of your code is 309. This page holds more than it seems. Good luck.
