Man struggling to recover after hit and run nearly takes his life, suspect still at large

Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel F. Conley and Massachusetts State Police Colonel Timothy Alben today asked for the public’s help identifying a vehicle involved in a hit-and-run collision this weekend that left a Boston man in critical condition.

The victim, Leon Haywood, a 63-year-old Dorchester resident, was entering his car in the area of 890 Morton St. at about 10:20 on Saturday night when he was struck by another vehicle traveling westbound at a high rate of speed.

Vehicle is believed to be a four-door sedan, possibly a Honda Accord, and possibly brown or silver in color.

With the assistance of Boston Police, State Police detectives assigned to the Suffolk DA’s offi

ce recovered footage from nearby public safety cameras that shows the suspect vehicle leaving the scene. Photos of the vehicle are included with this post.

Anyone with information on the suspect vehicle’s owner or location is asked to contact the Suffolk County State Police Detective Unit at 617-727-8817.

Responding emergency medical technicians rushed the man to Brigham and Women’s Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for injuries so severe that a priest performed the Sacrament of Last Rites. The victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The Suffolk SPDU is leading the investigation because it took place along Route 203, a state roadway within the City of Boston. They are assisted by the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, and other specialized units.

On Saturday, January 24, 2015 a 63 year old Dorchester man by the name of Leon Haywood a plumber for the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority was the victim of a hit and run car accident . Leon was left for dead, this was an atrocious violent act against a human being. The perpetrator of this vehicular hit-and-run has not yet been caught.
Leon was the primary breadwinner for his home his wife Jestina Haywood is physically challenged due to a debilitating stroke she was afflicted with over 8 years ago.
Leon is currently in the hospital in very critical condition ; he has two broken legs, broken ribs, a broken jaw head trauma and is also on dialysis.
The doctors believe that he will be in rehab for several months just to walk and learn how to do basic things again. This site is put together to raise money for the Haywoods living expenses and possibly their relocating to a home which will be more accessible to those who are physically challenged.
