A bear wandered past a playground and garden on Trap Road in Vienna on Monday.

Yeah, that's a bear alright!

Yeah, that’s a bear alright!

Lucy Caldwell, a Fairfax County police spokeswoman, said the bear sighting was reported to police at about 1 p.m. No humans came close to the bear, she said. Children were probably staying indoors rather than playing on the playground on a hot day.

Caldwell wasn’t sure whether the bear got into the garden, where tasty crops are growing.

She said the bear appeared to be a juvenile. This is the time of year when young bears leave their mothers to fend for themselves in the world, and many of them mistakenly wander into populated areas. Several have been spotted in Montgomery County lately, and at least two other bears were seen in Fairfax County in late May and again in June.
